Reducing methane emissions in ruminants: is it an achievable goal?
نویسنده
چکیده
Decreasing methane emissions and, more generally, decreasing the environmental footprint of ruminants is one pressing challenge facing the ruminant production sector. Notwithstanding, because of the intricate relationships existing between the efficiency of feed fermentation in the rumen and methanogenesis, mitigation options have to be evaluated not just in terms of their effect on methane or total GHG emissions but also on other rumen functional parameters and on their final consequences on animal production. The sustainability and profitability of the proposed mitigation options have to be considered as well. Several strategies that focus on the farm, the animal and the gastrointestinal microbes are currently being explored to decrease GHG emissions throughout the whole production cycle. Some of these strategies will be presented and discussed with a particular emphasis on the information available on technologies and feeding and management practices applicable to small ruminant production systems.

Greenhouse gas emissions in livestock production systems
Agriculture is responsible for a significant proportion of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (perhaps 18% globally), and therefore has the potential to contribute to efforts to reduce emissions as a means of minimising the risk of dangerous climate change. The largest contributions to emissions are attributed to ruminant methane production and nitrous oxide from animal waste and fert...
متن کاملGlobal Climate Change: Role of Livestock
Climate change is seen as a major threat to the survival of many species, ecosystems and the sustainability of livestock production systems in many parts of the world. Green house gases (GHG) are released in the atmosphere both by natural sources and anthropogenic (human related) activities. An attempt has been made in this article to understand the contribution of ruminant livestock to climate...
متن کاملStrategies to Reduce Methane Production in Ruminants
Ruminant animals play an important role in the food chain for evaluate cellulose and non-protein nitrogenous (NPN) compounds absorbed partially or not by other farm animals and humans. However, ruminant animals also bring some disadvantages. Methane, produced as a natural consequence of the ruminal digestion and it is a potential green house gas, is a problem, both ecologically and economically...
متن کاملControl of Methane Emission in Ruminants and Industrial Application of Biogas from Livestock Manure in Korea*
Methane is known to be one of the major greenhouse gases. On a global scale, livestock farming may contribute 18% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Though methane contribution is less than 2% of all the factors leading to global warming, it plays an important role because it is 21 times more effective than carbon dioxide. Methane emission is a direct result of the fermentation process performe...
متن کاملThe role of ruminants in reducing agriculture’s carbon footprint in North America
Owing to the methane (CH4) produced by rumen fermentation, ruminants are a source of greenhouse gas (GHG) and are perceived as a problem. We propose that with appropriate regenerative crop and grazing management, ruminants not only reduce overall GHG emissions, but also facilitate provision of essential ecosystem services, increase soil carbon (C) sequestration, and reduce environmental damage....
